Curcumin: Why Absorption and Formulation Matter

Turmeric has been used for centuries and is now a familiar ingredient in everything from cooking to dietary supplements. Much of the interest surrounding turmeric, however, centers on curcumin.

When curcumin is used in a supplement, the amount provided is only part of the formulation story. How it is formulated is another important part of the picture.  Understanding those differences can make a supplement label much more informative.

What Is Curcumin?

Curcumin is the best-known naturally occurring compound in turmeric, the golden spice familiar from both cooking and traditional practices. Today, curcumin has become a popular supplement ingredient in its own right, particularly for its role in supporting a healthy inflammatory response.*

Its use in supplements is also associated with maintaining joint comfort and mobility, as well as healthy vascular function.*

Turmeric naturally contains curcumin, but curcumin supplements typically use concentrated turmeric extracts to provide a more defined amount. That makes the Supplement Facts panel worth a closer look — it tells you how much curcumin the formula actually provides.

Why Curcumin Formulation Matters

Curcumin is not easily absorbed on its own. Much of it is broken down and processed by the body before it can reach the bloodstream, which limits how much becomes available.

That is why curcumin supplements often focus on more than the amount of curcumin alone. Piperine, a compound found in black pepper, can help increase its absorption, while liposomal formulas use phospholipids to form structures that carry curcumin within the liquid formula.

RESTORE brings these elements together, combining curcumin with sunflower-derived phospholipids and piperine in one liquid formulation.

What to Look for in a Curcumin Supplement

When choosing a curcumin supplement, look beyond the amount of curcumin on the label. The source, concentration and ingredients used alongside it can all be part of how the formula is designed.

RESTORE — Liposomal Curcumin uses 140 mg of turmeric extract standardized to 95%, providing 133 mg of curcumin. It combines this with 1,000 mg of sunflower lecithin, providing 850 mg of phosphatidylcholine, along with 1.8 mg of piperine.

Together, these ingredients create a liposomal curcumin formula that considers not only how much curcumin is provided, but how it is delivered.
